MARVELOUS MICHELLE; THE LION ROARS AGAIN; AND YET…
Well, last night, the first of four for the Dems, and there was Michelle. Michelle Obama. Bright, forceful, beguiling, strong, sharp, warm, funny, gorgeous, erudite, powerful, compassionate, loving, reflective, passionate, patriotic, endearing–have I left anything out? My, my; impressive. Yes, the right-wing will still go after her, find bits and pieces to twist and pervert and manipulate to demonize her. So be it. Can anyone, really, of sound mind and/or heart, look and listen to that woman and not find a smile inside their being in response? Continue Reading »

GO GO JOE!
What a great choice! Joe Biden. Yes, I’d have been thrilled if Joe had gotten the nod for Prez too. More or less. Considering the options that peopled the stage for the primary debates. But Obama got the nod, and all said and done, I’m thrilled with Barack. Yeah, he’s more “centrist” than I’d like, really, right out of the DNC mold. Hardly “the most liberal Democrat in the Senate” as he’s been dubbed. Hardly. But I admit - hear a speech or two, here and there, and at times I was subject to Obamamania myself. He can - and does - inspire. He’s inspired millions. So seriously, ask yourself, when was the last time you were inspired? By a politician no Continue Reading »

OKAY, SO HE CHEATED.
Well, thank God for the Olympics. Aside from providing me with visual images of muscle-bound bodies to lust after, it cut off the legs of the Edwards story. What was it, almost a week of sanctimonious, self-righteous blather about the “tragedy” of it all. Spare me. You wanna talk tragedy, I’ll give you tragedy. The thousands of men and women getting killed and brutally maimed in Iraq for no goddamn reason. The millions losing their jobs, going to bed hungry at night, unable to afford medicine or a visit with a doctor. And this is America, folks, 2008. I could go on, but I won’t. Not now. You get the drift.

The title is a quote from another one of my all-time favorite movies (Office Space). My last title “Butch is a Bitch” was from Best in Show. I am so clever sometimes I wish I could date myself. And in fact, maybe someday I could! I’ll just buy myself a little Dee Clone for $1M, which by then (let’s guesstimate 20 years from now), will be equivalent to today’s Ben Franklin. On second thought… Continue Reading »

There are people in our community - and in any community - who seem to be offended by the slightest thing. I try to avoid being one of those people. The things that annoy me aren’t so much the outright attempts to offend me - it’s the things that people say that make me want to ask “really? Did you really think about that first?”

You know it’s ironic. My older brother is a total hetero-queen. The boots he wears have 3″ heels and he bought them because they click when he walks, he uses a hair iron, he wears ass tight jeans, he L-O-V-E-S fashion, oh, and he loves women. I know, I thought he was gay too, but au contraire. He’s just femme!

Though the dance-happy queens from the “old Silverado” or doped-up dudes lounging in their birthday suits have only been gone from the building less than a year, Portland powerhouse pub factory McMenamins announced today it has purchased the old Silverado/Club Portland complex location at the corner of SW 12th and Stark Street, a longtime infamous corner of Portland’s fast-gentrifying “gay district,” Southwest Stark Street, and plans to open an as-yet-unnamed hotel and restaurant in the renovated building as early as winter of 2009.

The new law allowing same sex couples to establish domestic partnerships was in front of the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals in Oregon.
Or, more precisely, judges heard about an attempt to refer that law to the ballot, using Oregon’s referendum system. And as Rob Manning reports, the arguments weren’t really about gay rights — they were about the rights of people who sign election petitions.
