NEWSMATTERS - Waiting for Another Shoe to Drop…

So Ed Rollins, that venerable Republican strategist, says tonight that “it’s over” and “McCain’s lost”.  Hmm…  That kind of confidence I don’t have, despite the recent polls.  Twenty-six days in politics, especially in this election, is how many lifetimes?…

Granted, for a host of reasons I seem to be in a worried stage of life right now, but I do feel an ongoing sense of worry.  McCain, and especially Palin, are whipping up Continue Reading »

NEWSMATTERS - Getting Rough

Well, with 30 days left to go and Obama beginning to pull away, both nationally and within the ‘toss-up’ State polls, Bill Kristol–that sniveling, insufferable, neocon moronic editor of the Weekly Standard, wonders whether there’s still time for McCain to ‘catch up’?  He urges, again, that “character” is an issue and McCain shouldn’t be afraid to bring it up.  As if one of the sleaziest, low-balling campaigns in recent memory , hasn’t been lying and twisting the truth and slinging mud now for months.  And Continue Reading »

NEWSMATTERS: The Veep Debate and Performance Art

Well, in enough ways, I’m pleased. Moreseo than the first Presidential debate, in which I thought for sure that McCain had won “on points” and delighted to find, in the coming days, that the public apparently didn’t see it that way, but “scored” Obama higher and pronounced him “the winner.” Tonight, I couldn’t help feeling that Biden “hit it out of the park” and that nothing essentially changed the trajectory of the race at this point.

I have no doubt that Palin’s supporters will be thrilled Continue Reading »

NEWSMATTERS - Time to say “Goodbye” to Gordon Smith

I think it was a little more than a decade ago that my dear friend Susan tragically died.  Elizabeth Furse came to the memorial in her honor and was one of the speakers that took to the stage to say nice things about her.  I knew that Susan must have been so proud and grateful, because political activist and feminist that she was, Susan had worked awfully hard to get Furse elected.  And it is in the midst of this absolutely insane electoral season that I have to ask:  “Elizabeth, Elizabeth, what on earth has happened to you?!”  I’ve just seen not the first but the second commercial for Gordon Smith’s Continue Reading »

NEWSMATTERS - MAD McCain Disease???

These are VERY scary times we’re living in.  I know, I know, not the first time I’ve uttered such banalities here or there, but whatchagonnado?… I was still a child when I went to my parents and asked:  “Why is everyone so stupid?”  And that question has repeated and repeated and repeated throughout the years and decades.

Has McCain ever looked so incredibly nauseating Continue Reading »

Learned Helplessness

When I was in college, studying psychology, I became extremely interested in the theory of “learned helplessness.” From wikipedia: “Learned helplessness is a psychological condition in which a human being or an animal has learned to act or behave helpless in a particular situation, even when it has the power to change its unpleasant or even harmful circumstance.”

Lately it’s been popping up rather frequently when working with my clients, typically small business owners. I own a business that provides identity and marketing counsel and development for these businesses, and the philosophy I’ve come to follow is called Continue Reading »

NEWSMATTERS - Enough!!!

“COUNTRY FIRST?” - GIMME A BREAK, McCAIN!

Ohhhhboy…  It’s been hard for me to get back to blogging about this campaign, so sordid and cynical and depressing as it’s become.  As much of a political junkie as I am, I confess to, only with great pain and discipline, watching a few bits and pieces of the Republican Convention, although I did watch McCain and Palin’s speeches in their entirety.  I did tell you the Palin pick was “brilliant” earlier, didn’t I?  Brilliant, yes, and oh so cynical and low-road-Machiavellian.  A gifted speaker, engaging, Continue Reading »

Gay Republicans Endorse McCain Four Years After Snubbing Bush

ST. PAUL (Reuters) - The Log Cabin Republicans endorsed Arizona Sen. John McCain’s bid for the presidency on Tuesday, four years after the gay Republican group refused to back President George W. Bush’s bid for reelection.

NEWSMATTERS - A “Hail Sarah” Pass

A “HAIL SARAH” PASS

So John McCain picks Sarah Palin as his running mate. Risky, yes, but I think a brilliant strategic choice. As calculated a choice as could be, but what else is new. No longer can McCain or the RNC seriously use “the experience issue” against Obama, after his pickup of Palin. She has served approx. 1-1/2 years as the Governor of Alaska. Before that, she was the mayor a small Alaska town. Before that, the PTA. NO, none, zilch, nada, zip, Zero foreign policy experience. Continue Reading »

NEWSMATTERS - Barack says “Enough!”

BARACK SAYS “ENOUGH!”

Last night, Barack said “Enough!” to the shame, disgrace and utterly failed policies and leadership of George Bush, and the low-down, small-minded and stale record and campaign of John McCain. And I said “WOW!”

It is hard to avoid cliche-ridden testimony of last night’s spectacular acceptance of the Presidential nomination, since so much has already been said repetitively concerning the brilliance of his oratorical ability and his talents in spellbinding a crowd. So, enough said on that score. On substance, he was more detailed than he has been: enumerating point after point after point of the kinds of policy changes he would like to make as President. On “values”, he was proud and strong, refusing to allow Bush, McCain and the Republicans to claim a monopoly on patriotism and love and country. I LOVED the fact that finally, finally, Continue Reading »
