These comments were sad that he made while in Philadelphia. Now, even more sad is that he feels he has to make these comments to hide his own homosexuality. While he is frightened to death of his secret coming out, he needs to realize that the man he is dating on the sly is not really good at keeping secrets or his own sexuality a secret. This story is going to come out at some point. Portland is just too small for him to think his secret is safe for long, when his actions are more transparent that he realizes.
