American Idol is back and now I care. The overall gayness of American Idol is hardly an item of question. Perhaps America’s most famous non-out gay

celebrity is the Season 2 runner up Clay Aiken. Although some people are starting to question that: not the gay part - the celebrity part.

Anyway, I settled in to see the nominal top 12 boys sing last night. The Season 7 Boys win my award for best looking, across the board.

We, the gay American Idol audience have longed for a contestant who comes out, proud and loud, BEFORE the competition ends for him. Taking nothing away from Jim Verraros and RJ Helton, who both came out after being on Season 1, it would mean a lot for us and our cause to be able to back a singer who is brave enough to come out WHILE competing.

This may be the year, sisters. I am, of course, speaking of Danny Noriega, tha gayest American Idol contestant since, well, Clay Aiken. I get this sense of courage and bravery in Mr. Noriega that I usually associate with Drag Queens. Maybe that’s the vibe I am getting from Danny, too.

Do you ever meet a man who simply has no need to come out? Well, Danny is such a man (boy?, 18) and I am not saying that to make fun of him. I say it with pride, myself. Danny, go out there and sing like your gay life depended on it. And a bit of advice: come out officially long before the jokes and hatemongering comments ever begin.

You already have gay fans. Go get more.
