Historic, friendly vibe draws welcoming crowd
If you’re in need of good lift and time, definitely check out this friendly joint for its piano bar and good drinks. It’s housed in an Old Town historic building, which is just a small part of its charm. Inside you’ll find the piano bar, along with several pool tables. Although it attracts mostly a gay crowd, everyone is welcome, which is why I love this place. It’s whole vibe is very inviting and friendly and doesn’t know how to be pretentious. Maggie A was right too — their baked brie rocks!
Tip: Definitely check out their courtyard when the weather is warm.
Munchies (aka appetizers) are better than meals here (the baked brie is a must) and the atmosphere is cool / hip…. Piano bar and pool tables. The bartender makes a mean champagne cocktail. The place has a mellow, feel-good karma to it. The crowd as well as the wait staff (both mostly gay) are always friendly and in a good mood. Everyone is welcome here and it’s one of the few bars around town where you can actually hear the conversation you’re having with your friends. The location is around China Town (which can sometimes get kinda scarey after dark). Don’t walk from bar to bar solo. Neighboring hot spots include Dante’s and Darcelle’s.
Tip: Don’t drink lots of beer before champagne…. I learned this on my birthday.
This is a great place to hang out with friends for a bit. The atmosphere is one of the most laid back ones I have experienced in Portland yet… love it. We got there around 5.00- before the shanghai tour - and it was pretty empty save for the older group of ‘regulars’… We got our drinks, played a bit of pool and hung out in what is undoubtedly one of the coolest internal courtyards in the city.
The staff is friendly and attentive, one clued us in to where the good spots are to sit for optimal people watching… which is always fun. It’s a great escape from the typical bar scene in Old Town.
I came here for dinner before taking a tour of the Shanghai Tunnels, and was reasonably impressed. (There are a number of Shanghai Tunnel tours of Portland, but the one we chose starts at Hobo’s.) The building has high vaulted ceilings, lots of natural light, and original brick and woodwork — a beautifully maintained Old Town building.
Waitpeople at Hobo’s are attentive and friendly; as is my wont (or my obsession), I tried the macaroni and cheese, and it passed the Christen test (neither too gooey nor too clumpy). The drinks were good as well.
Hobo’s manages to be that rare (but, I think, uniquely Portland) combination — both elegant and laid back.
