Red Cap Garage
Red Cap Garage is a gay bar on Stark Street in downtown Portland. It is connected to Boxxes and it features dancing, a drag show on Wednesdays and stiff drinks every night.
The newly-renovated porch looks out on Stark Street and is a favorite place to watch the streetlife.

So, is this also Boxxes or just attached to it?????? The bar tenders are friendly and the pace picks up well after 10:30pm…That’s when the music starts and the curtain comes up on the dance floor (at least on Thursdays). The drinks are $2 (at Boxxes-the ajoining bar?) but the sidewalk patio is Red Cap? I’m confused…or buzzed…or both. My “straight” (so she says) friend had a great time here as do most “straight” girls in a gay club.
Cheers to the bar tender that pours them tall and strong!
So I went to Portland to visit with a friend from college, who was there for an interview. We putz around, and come 5pm, we were ready for happy hour. We walked past this bar, liked the music that was playing (lou reed) and the lighting (red) and the name (with its reference to commies and all), and decided to have a drink here despite the fact that the place was empty.
The bartender poured us each very strong STRONG $2 gin and tonics. After about an hour, hour and a half, the place had filled up a bit… with gay men. So I think this place is a gay bar, but hey my straight friends and I enjoyed ourselves.
Anyway the 4 star rating is due to the strongness and cheapness of the drinks, the friendly bartender, and the nice lighting and good music.
went with my BGF (best gay friend) and was thrilled that they were playing hip-hop instead of the dreaded techno I am forced to listen to on all other gay-outtings.
the drinks were cheap & strooong. i was trashed and dancing the night away in no time.
they had some interesting go-go boys — one of which tried to tell me in the bathroom that he had met the “real Britney” and that she never shaved her head — that was her double. I might have been hammered but this guy was nutso.
very smoky & the half-door bathroom stall doors don’t do much for the modest straight girl.
Regular bar, friendly service, smoky and non-smoking room, crappy typical gay club music. Its attached to BOXXES which is non-smoking and a bit more clean. My boyfriend and I took a friend just moved from LA to check out the gay/lesbian scene. She had a pretty good time. That night for some reason was full of cute guys from indie to femme. But another time its got a different scene, bears. So I don’t know. I am not familiar with the queer scene in pdx. I don’t have any other queer friends either. Good luck on finding that out!
Apparently this place has varying degrees of gayness, but when I was there last night the only indication it was a gay bar was the poster on the wall advertising their upcoming underwear party. The drinks are insanely cheap–regular price for Miller High Life is $1.25 and well drinks are $2. A Long Island will set you back $4. These are the prices when they AREN’T having drink specials! Bottom line: a centrally located downtown bar with the cheapest drinks I know of in Portland. Who cares how gay it is?
