Holy crap gays in Portland can get down! I rolled into Portland one night and checked out Silverado. Had a great time and made out with a Frenchman while his boyfriend was in the restroom.
So as you all may have heard, Silverado has moved to a new location:
318 SW 3rd Avenue.
I visited the new location on the day after New Years.
First impressions were that the new location is not entirely finished.
Everything is painted black which is no surprise considering the
previous location. There are no decorations on the walls or ceilings…
yet. The staff is the same as well as the talent, plus a few new faces.
Environment-
When you first walk in you encounter a narrow lobby-like room with
a long bar to the left. If you continue to the rear you will encounter a
few poker machines and the kitchen. Make a left through some French
doors and you will come a smallish court yard. There is nothing here
yet but I can imagine it would be a great place a for a few tables and
chairs as an outside social area. Take another left and you will arrive
in the main club. This is a very large room with high ceilings, a stage
to the right and another bar (hooray!) to the left, but closed (boo!).
There are two large projector screens showing the stage and the dancers.
There is a platform cage to the rear of the room and a balcony as well.
Over all there is MUCH more space in the new Silverados than the last.
Plus there are many more places to be instead of the loud and wild club
environment.
Drinks-
I will most likely have to come back and change this section as the night
I went they ran out of beer and the drinks were very light. I am giving them
Some slack since the place is still in process of getting entirely up to speed.
I think the goal of the owners was to have no down time instead of closing
for a few weeks to complete the new site. So this section is to be continued…
This review is meant to be a first look into the new location. I will of course
follow up and make an update on the finished product. I encourage anyone
to visit the new location and make their own observations.
I have mixed feelings about the Silverado’s new location. I’ve been going to the Silverado regularly for several years and am starting to question why. I often leave wondering whether there are things going on in the club that I’m better off not knowing. For example, are the dancers straight, gay, hustling? Why is the staff sometimes very friendly and other times aloof? Why are so many customers (of all sizes, shapes, and ages) so self-absorbed? Why do some of the cutest guys there bring a “girlfriend” with them? The traffic pattern at the new club is horrible on a busy night or on a Sunday afternoon. Going to the bar to get a drink and navigating customers who will not move an inch only encourages me to sip my drinks very slowly. The new club appears to have retained its loyal following of customers and stable of male “performers,” so they must be doing something right. I suppose I should just accept that I’m stepping into another world for a couple of hours - a world where the rules don’t necessarily make sense and where people aren’t always behaving at their best. The one bright spot at the new club is the cocktail waiter - he makes everything else tolerable.
Located in the center of Portland’s gay bar scene, this spot welcomes everyone from businessmen and college students to drag queens and leather enthusiasts sipping on domestic and microbrews, martinis and specialty cocktails–as long as they’re over 21. Young, fit dancers shake everything they’ve got as entertainment, while happening club-goers take to the mini dance floor and groove to techno, house and ’80s beats spun by a DJ.
We love Silverado. They generously sponsor our gay softball team. Go Gators! Thanks Silverado!
