BASIC RIGHTS OREGON WORKS FOR CHANGE ON EVERY LEVEL.

Pledge To Defend EqualityBasic Rights Oregon understands that real social change involves both big leaps forward and smaller, incremental gains; changes in the law and changes in hearts and minds; demonstrating our power in the moment and knowing when we need to build more power to win. So we approach our mission of ending discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity from many directions:

* We initiate and champion legislation and monitor the legislative process with the help of one of Oregon’s most respected lobbyists.
* We recruit, educate, endorse, and support pro-equality candidates and work closely with them once they are elected. And we hold anti-equality lawmakers accountable.
* We work for change in Oregon courts, striving to build a body of pro-equality case law.
* We educate the public through the media, public education campaigns and grassroots conversations.
* We work to build grassroots power around the state through Basic Rights Action Teams, which are grassroots-led activists teams that partner with BRO to create change in their local communities and at the state level.
* We leverage the power of the progressive movement through coalition partnerships with reproductive choice, economic justice, faith, business, labor, racial justice, education and civil liberties organizations.
* We defend against anti-gay attacks in all their forms–at the ballot, in local government, in the legislature and more.

We’re a statewide organization that’s also part of a national movement!

BRO’s mission links us with local communities throughout Oregon as well as with our national movement. Our efforts in Oregon have helped keep our state on the cutting edge of civil rights protections across the country. Through all of our work we work in close connection and partnership with the national LGBT rights movement including the Human Rights Campaign, National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, Freedom to Marry, the National Center for Transgender Equality, the ACLU, the federation of state equality organizations and more.
